The Monsoon Session of Parliament kicks off today and is expected to be contentious, as the Opposition INDIA bloc prepares to corner the Narendra Modi-led government over a series of sensitive issues, including the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, the Bihar Special Intensive Revision (SIR), and the Air India (AI) 171 crash.
This session is the first to convene since Operation Sindoor, India’s retaliatory strike on terror camps following the deadly Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 lives. The Opposition had earlier demanded a special session on the issue and is now expected to seek accountability from the government on both the attack and the military response.
The government also faces scrutiny over former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent comments about mediating between India and Pakistan during the Sindoor operation—a claim the Opposition is likely to use to press for clarity on India’s diplomatic stance.
Additionally, lawmakers are expected to raise serious concerns over aviation safety, particularly in the aftermath of the AI 171 crash. Questions will be posed regarding:
- Passenger safety standards
- DGCA safety audits and inspections
- Maintenance records for Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, including checks conducted and irregularities found
RJD MP Manoj Kumar Jha and AAP MP Sandeep Kumar Pathak have submitted detailed questions on these matters, while BJP MP Ashokrao Chavan has sought data on inspections of Dreamliner aircraft.
Key parliamentary business for the day includes:
- Tabling of ministry papers by Union Ministers including Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Arjun Ram Meghwal, and Jayant Chaudhary
- Presentation of the Select Committee Report on the Income Tax Bill, 2025 by NCP MP Supriya Sule
- Consideration of the Goa ST Readjustment Bill, 2024, by Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal
Another major agenda item is the resolution for extending President’s Rule in Manipur, which has been in effect since February 13, 2025, under Article 356(1) of the Constitution.
Both houses will begin with obituary references to former members, and the Rajya Sabha will also mark Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge’s birthday with formal greetings.
The Monsoon Session 2025 will span 32 days with 21 sittings, including a recess from August 12 to August 18. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has indicated that 17 key legislative and policy items are slated for debate and passage.
The session is expected to witness intense political debate, with the Opposition poised to mount a united front on national security, electoral transparency, and public safety concerns.
